More than 15 years after his passing, one of Texas’ most recognizable voices is returning to audiences through a new collection of collaborative recordings.
“Dan Seals & Friends: The Last Duet,” scheduled for release Aug. 28, brings together an all-star lineup of country, pop and Americana artists who perform alongside newly restored vocals from the late Texas singer-songwriter Dan Seals. Produced by Seals’ longtime collaborator Kyle Lehning, the project uses modern digital audio technology to isolate Seals’ original vocal performances before pairing them with newly recorded contributions from contemporary artists.
The 18-track collection spans Seals’ career and includes duets featuring Blake Shelton, Tanya Tucker, Vince Gill, Luke Bryan, Sara Evans, Jamey Johnson, Marie Osmond, John Ford Coley, Alabama, Suzy Bogguss, Jackie Evancho, Ned LeDoux, John Berry, Wendy Moten, Katharine McPhee, Lynda Carter, Jasmine Amy Rogers and The Castellows. Several singles have already been released ahead of the album, offering fans an early glimpse of the project.
Unlike traditional tribute albums, The Last Duet preserves Seals’ original performances, allowing listeners to hear his unmistakable voice in newly imagined collaborations while introducing his catalog to a new generation of fans.
For Texas music enthusiasts, the project also serves as a reminder of Seals’ remarkable ability to bridge musical genres throughout his career.
Born and raised in Texas, Seals first gained national recognition during the 1970s as “England Dan” in the pop duo England Dan & John Ford Coley, whose soft-rock hits included “I’d Really Love to See You Tonight” and “Nights Are Forever Without You.” After the duo disbanded, Seals reinvented himself as a country artist, launching one of the genre’s most successful runs during the 1980s.
His first major country breakthrough came with “God Must Be a Cowboy” in 1984, followed by an impressive string of 11 No. 1 country singles. Songs including “Bop,” “Everything That Glitters (Is Not Gold),” “One Friend,” “Meet Me in Montana,” and “Three Time Loser” helped establish Seals as one of country music’s defining voices of the decade. His work earned multiple CMA honors and Grammy nominations while showcasing a songwriting style built on emotional honesty and memorable storytelling.
Throughout his career, Seals was known for carefully selecting songs that resonated with him personally rather than simply chasing commercial success. Even after his chart-topping years, he continued performing, later touring with his brother, Jim Seals of Seals & Crofts, as Seals & Seals.
Seals died in 2009 after a battle with mantle cell lymphoma, but his influence has continued to grow. In 2025, he was posthumously inducted into the Texas Heritage Songwriters Hall of Fame, recognizing a career that successfully crossed the worlds of pop and country while remaining rooted in Texas musical tradition.
With Dan Seals & Friends: The Last Duet, producers hope longtime fans will rediscover familiar classics while introducing younger listeners to one of Texas’ most versatile recording artists. The project celebrates not only Seals’ catalog, but also the enduring appeal of songs that continue to resonate decades after they were first recorded.
The album will be released Aug. 28 on digital platforms, with previously released singles already available for streaming.
