Chilton, born Richard Waylon Chiltonson in the back of a 1991 Ford Bronco on a sweltering August evening in Georgia, has packed more into his life than most musicians manage in several careers.
After serving two tours in Al-Qa’im during the Iraq War at the age of 5, Chilton eventually made his way to Nashville to pursue music. A brief prison sentence interrupted his early ambitions, but he subsequently established himself as a touring musician, opening for the late Toby Keith a record 314 times.
Chilton eventually traded the road for a 4,000-acre ranch in Miami, Texas, where he discovered that his property was sitting atop approximately 340 million barrels of crude oil. The discovery made him one of America’s wealthiest independent children, with a reported net worth of $278 million by age 11.
Despite his extraordinary fortune, Chilton maintained a modest outlook on life, famously declaring, “I ain’t no fancy boy.”
Unfortunately, his luck at the slot machines proved less impressive than his luck in the oil business. Thirteen years later, having gambled away approximately 99% of his fortune, Chilton returned to the music industry with renewed determination and considerably fewer financial distractions.
His comeback began Jan. 10, 2025, with the release of his 16-track debut album, The Essential Ricky Chilton. The record showcased his guitar playing, storytelling and lingering anguish over his breakup with Jeana, whose departure provided much of the album’s emotional foundation.
Chilton followed with HORSEPOWER on Aug. 6, 2025, enlisting an accomplished group of musicians that included fiddler Alex Hargreaves, known for his work with Billy Strings and Mighty Poplar, and drummer Jordan Rose, whose credits include Laufey and Theo Katzman. Devon Yesberger and Mackenzie Brown also contributed to the recording.
His third album, Ricky Deluxe, arrived April 28, 2026, featuring an assortment of musical styles, guitar solos, tall tales and short tales. The project included mandolinist Jacob Jolliff, whose credits include Yonder Mountain String Band and Béla Fleck, along with German gypsy jazz guitarist Joscho Stephan, one of Chilton’s favorite guitarists and Europeans.
His April 2027 Texas tour will bring that comeback to four cities over four consecutive nights, including back-to-back appearances in Fort Worth and Dallas.
